Our Story

Founded 2024
2022

Everything started with a simple question: what if the challenges facing agriculture weren't separate problems, but connected ones? In 2022, Kenya experienced one of its worst droughts in decades. Across farming communities, feed costs rose, productivity declined, and food security weakened — while tonnes of organic waste continued to be discarded every day.

"The real barrier wasn't the biology — it was knowing what was happening inside the colony before it was too late."

2024

While studying Biology at the University of Nairobi, our founder, Abigail Ndekei, encountered Black Soldier Fly biotechnology: a nature-based process capable of converting organic waste into sustainable animal feed and organic fertiliser.

In 2024, Rethink Organic was founded to help smallholder farmers cut production costs, manage waste sustainably, and build climate-resilient livelihoods through circular agriculture — because agriculture shouldn't have to choose between productivity and sustainability.

Farmers experimenting with the practice often struggled to maintain the stable temperature and humidity BSF colonies need, with problems only visible after production had already dropped. That gap inspired a bigger vision: pairing biotechnology with digital monitoring to make sustainable farming easier to get right, not just easier to start.

See inside every
rearing cycle.

Mkuu-lima is our IoT monitoring platform for Black Soldier Fly farming — live sensor data, SMS alerts, and a mobile dashboard, built to give farmers and lenders confidence in what's happening on the ground.

01 — Why Monitoring Matters

Rearing systems are easy to lose track of

Black Soldier Fly rearing is a living process — temperature, moisture, and feeding all shift day to day. Left unmonitored, small drifts are easy to miss until they've already affected the batch.

No visibility between visits

Farmers and field agents can only see conditions when they're physically at the kit — everything in between is a blind spot.

Guesswork instead of data

Without readings to act on, farmers rely on instinct and experience alone to judge whether a cycle is on track.

Hard to verify from a distance

Lenders and partners financing a kit have no independent way to confirm it's installed, running, and being used as intended.

Our Answer

Mkuu-lima puts a sensor inside the system

A GSM/WiFi-connected sensor unit sits inside the rearing kit and reports back automatically — turning an opaque, manual process into one that farmers, agents, and lenders can all see and trust, from wherever they are.

What It Feels Like

An alert lands, not a mystery

When something needs attention, Mkuu-lima sends a plain-language SMS straight to the farmer's phone — illustrative example shown here — so the next step is always obvious.

02 — What It Does

One sensor, three ways to stay informed

1

Real-time monitoring

The sensor unit continuously reads conditions inside the rearing system, day and night.

2

SMS alerts

Critical alerts reach the farmer by SMS via Africa's Talking — no smartphone or data connection required to receive them.

3

Mobile dashboard

A fully native app gives farmers and agents a fuller view of current status and recent history at a glance.

4

Remote visibility

Field teams and financing partners can check that a kit is installed and active without a site visit.

03 — How It's Built

From sensor to phone, in three hops

Hardware

Backend

What Mkuu-lima monitors

Mkuu-lima is built around our Black Soldier Fly rearing kit. The sensor is what turns that biological process into something measurable and manageable day to day.
